1 Dead, Others Injured After SUV Crashes Into Crowd in Germany

Police in Mannheim, Germany are investigating an incident that took place on Monday, March 3, which has left one person dead and multiple injured. 

“According to current findings, a car drove into a group of people in Mannheim city center,” police said in a statement. “According to the current status of the investigation, one person was killed and several people were injured.” 

Police added that they cannot share exact numbers of injured people or the severity of the injuries.

“As part of the search measures that were immediately initiated, a suspect was identified and arrested,” police added, noting that it is unclear whether there are additional suspects at this time.

PEOPLE has reached out to Mannheim Police for comment and updates on the ongoing situation. 

A black SUV drove into a crowd of people on a pedestrianized street on Monday as crowds gathered in the western Germany’s Rhineland to celebrate parades for carnival season, Reutersreported. Mannheim is located about 52 miles south of Frankfurt, Germany.

The incident comes after Germany has experienced a string of violence in recent weeks. In December, a car crashed into a crowd at a Christmas market in Magdeburg, Germany, west of Berlin, that resulted in five deaths and left more than 200 people injured. 

And in February, a driver plowed into a protest group in Munich injuring at least 28 people.
