The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arrested thirty-four suspected cyber criminals at 21, Sawmill Road Awa-Ijebu, Ogun state.
The suspects involved in cybercrime popularly known as ‘yahoo yahoo’ or ‘G’ were ranged between ages 19 and 37 and they included: twenty-three (23) students of Olabisi Onabanjo University (OOU), out of which nine were females who purportedly claimed to be girlfriends and or neighbours of some of the fraudsters; one from the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) and twelve others are non-students.
The Anti-graft agency got wind of their activities through series of intelligence reports alleging that the suspects engaged in fraudulent activities of obtaining money by false pretences through sending emails to unsuspicious victims mostly in the United States while others were engaged in romance scam on several dating sites.
At the point of arrest, EFCC personnel recovered not less than three hundred SIM cards from them. Other items recovered from the include: different models and brands of exotic cars, 50 phones, 18 laptops and two bags of charms from them. Several documents containing false pretences were also recovered from the fraudsters.
The Suspects would be charged to court accordingly as soon as investigations are concluded.
