Two policemen, a bank security guard and an aged man were, on Monday, killed and several others gravely wounded when armed robbers attacked a bank in Ijero-Ekiti in Ijero Local Government Area of Ekiti State.
It was learnt that the robbers attacked the community following Aramoko Road in an ambulance with a coffin filled with weapons and escaped through the same path after attacking a Police station in the community, where they killed two policemen.
They reportedly moved to the bank, where the chief security guard was shot at the Automated Teller Machine, (ATM), gallery of the bank.
An eyewitness revealed that the armed robbers announced their arrival with shootings, which sent residents scurrying for safety.
The thieves reportedly blew the bank’s security door open with dynamite to gain entry into the banking hall.
They were said to have made away with an unstipulated amount of money during the invasion, which was said to have lasted for about an hour.
The shooting spree by the robbers paralysed transportation, economic and social activities in the scene.
Police Public Relations Officer in Ekiti State, Mr. Caleb Ikechukwu, who said he was still at the bank branch “to gather reliable information on the armed robbery incident,” said the attack occurred at about 5:30p.m.
In his statement, “there were casualties. They succeeded by using dynamite to gain access into the banking hall and the robbery took place around 5:30p.m. on Monday(yesterday).
“There was no casualty on the side of the bank, while there were one or two on the side of the police.”
