Nigerian striker, Odion Ighalo, Odion Ighalo has expressed disappointment with the non-inclusion of more local players in the Super Eagles’ provisional squad for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.
In the 41-man list submitted by head coach, Jose Peseiro, only three goalkeepers; Ojo Olorunleke, Amas Obasogie, and Christian Nwoke were included in the list.
According to Ighalo, home-based players deserve more places in the squad.
Speaking with Oma Sports, he said: “I don’t think it’s right not to invite home-based players, this is a 40-man list, at least five to seven players should be on the list to encourage them. Not inviting them means you don’t focus on the league.”
It remains to be seen if the trio will make the final 27-man squad for the tournament.
Back in January, Odion Ighalo ruled out joining the Super Eagles again, insisting that the national team is in safe hands.
In 2019, he announced his retirement from international football with Nigeria after winning the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) Golden Boot. But in 2021, he came out of retirement to represent the Super Eagles of Nigeria again.
