There are a variety of causes for erectile problems, dysfunction and even impotence.

As I’ve stated in the past, the primary cause is hormonal imbalances. Secondly, would be poor blood flow.

Of course, there will always be emotional and psychological issues as well – but that’s a lot more complex and very individual.

However, most experts and even doctors never talk about one of the biggest causes of erectile problems and that has to do with sugar.

More specifically, high blood sugar levels.

Chronically high blood sugar and A1C levels, leads to insulin resistance and lower sensitivity to insulin and this can cause pre-diabetes and eventually type 2 diabetes.

As a reminder, as blood sugar levels go up, your body and pancreas release insulin to help lower blood sugar back down to normal, healthy levels.

Insulin is a hormone and it interacts with other hormones, especially your sex hormones such as testosterone, estrogen, prolactin … as well as stress hormones like Cortisol…. And also anti-aging hormones such as Growth Hormone and IGF.

So, this is the first problem with having high blood sugar levels – negative hormonal changes.

Secondly, high blood sugar and erectile problems is related to your circulation and nervous system.

Poorly controlled blood sugar levels can damage small blood vessels and nerves. Damage to the nerves that control sexual stimulation and response, can impede a man’s ability to achieve an erection firm enough to have sexual intercourse.

Reduced blood flow from damaged blood vessels further contribute to erectile dysfunction and impotence.

So, what does this mean for you?
