Brits have been warned of torrential rain to batter parts of the UK over a nine-hour period by the Met Office.
“Rain becoming persistent and heavy this evening, leading to some impacts on travel and infrastructure,” states the Met Office. The yellow warning runs from 6pm today until 3am on Tuesday morning and covers southern and western parts of the UK.
The position of the jet stream across the middle of the UK is the reason for the current unsettled spell due to low pressure forming in the troughs. And here is a list of the 39 areas that are to be affected by the warning as the disappointing summer continues for sun lovers.
“After a generally cloudy day with showers, more persistent rain will push north this evening and overnight,” states the Met Office. “Rain will be persistent and heavy at times, particularly so for hills, moors and headlands exposed to brisk winds. Most of the warning area will see 20-40 mm of rain, with as much as 60-70 mm possible for some areas, for example Dartmoor and Exmoor. Rain should ease from the south during the night, clearing to scattered showers by morning.”
There is better news on the way later in the month, according to the long range weather forecast. The Met Office currently predicts that “many areas” will start the period from Friday, July 12 as “mostly dry as a ridge of high pressure dominates the UK.” They added: “It should feel pleasant enough in mostly light winds and sunshine, with temperatures generally near average, but some rural areas could experience chilly nights.”
