In the days following Samantha Cope and Joey Lawrence’s split, the actress was reflecting on the themes of loss in her life.
On Aug. 13, Cope, 37, filed for divorce from Lawrence after just two years of marriage, citing irreconcilable differences. She listed their date of separation as June 7, 2024.
In an Instagram post from June 11, just four days after they quietly separated, she shared a quote along with several photos of her and her 19-month-old daughter Dylan, whom she shares with her Lawrence, calling the collection of images her “favs lately.”
The quote from writer Brianna Wiest began, “Not everything you lose is a loss. Some things are freedom. Some things are a second chance. Some things are a miracle in disguise. Some things are a detachment long-needed, a clarity brought to blurry eyes.”
The quote went on to reference an “intervention” and an “unexpected answer to a long-chanted prayer.”
“Some things are a healing. Some things are a becoming,” the quote continued. “Some things are a devastation, but others are a kind of vital guidance, the kind of course-correction you did not even know you needed. The kind you did not even realize you were asking for all along.”

Cope and Lawrence, 48, met on the set of Lifetime’s My Husband’s Secret Brother in 2020 and tied the knot in May 2022.
At the time, Cope told PEOPLE of their relationship, “From day one, it was such a safe place to be myself. He loves everything about me and celebrates all those weird quirks about me. I was so blessed to be in a position to receive that.”
“Two weeks in, I was like, ‘I will be with you forever,'” she added.
Lawrence, meanwhile, said he was “so thankful” to have found Cope. “It just feels so right.”
“When you meet the right person, if you’re lucky enough, it cuts to the chase so quick,” he continued. “I have somebody who is like-minded and has the same love language and we communicate the same way. That’s super important.”
In December 2023, Lawrence reflected on his and Cope’s unorthodox meet-cute, recalling how “crazy” it was to date someone he’d met on a set.
“I’d never dated somebody that I’d worked with before. That was just very, very much out of the ordinary for me.”
The added irony: “I was her killer [in the movie]. Well, I was her lover — and also her killer.”
