Patrick Mahomes Sr. Begins 10-Day Jail Sentence in Texas for DWI Conviction

Patrick Mahomes Sr. has begun serving his sentence in county jail following a DWI conviction.

Mahomes Sr., 54, was booked into Smith County Jail at 4:53 p.m on Monday, Oct. 21, according to court records obtained by PEOPLE. He’ll be released from custody on Oct. 31.

The father of Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes is serving the 10-day sentence after pleading guilty to his third charge of driving while intoxicated (DWI).

Mahomes Sr. was arrested on Feb. 3 — just days before his son won a third Super Bowlfor the Chiefs — after recording a blood alcohol content of 0.23 when an officer pulled him over in Tyler, Texas.

He submitted his guilty plea in August, agreeing to serve the 10 days in county jail in addition to five years of probation and an additional year of “intense supervision,” according to local news station KETK.

When the former MLB pitcher was arrested in February, the arresting officer said Mahomes Sr. had an open can of beer in the center console of his vehicle. He was taken into custody after failing his field sobriety tests, per KETK.

In 2018, Mahomes Sr. served 40 days in county jail following a previous DWI arrest.

In 2016, the retired pitcher was charged with public intoxication during a game between TCU and his son’s alma mater, Texas Tech, per Bleacher Report.

Mahomes Sr. shares Patrick and his brother Jackson with ex-wife Randi Mahomes. He is also the father of Zoe Mahomes, whom he shares with ex Anika Cooper.

From 1992 to 2003, Mahomes Sr. played in the MLB. He pitched for the Boston Red Sox, New York Mets, Texas Rangers, Chicago Cubs and Pittsburgh Pirates. He was recognized for his career in the league with a spot in the Sioux Falls Canaries Hall of Fame.
