Woman and Her 2 Young Children Presumed Dead After ‘Intentional’ Plunge from Niagara Falls

A woman and her two children are presumed dead after going over Niagara Falls in an incident police have described as “intentional in nature.”

New York State Police identified the three individuals as 33-year-old Chaianti Means, Roman Rossman, 9, and 5-month old Mecca Means.

A spokesperson for state police tells PEOPLE the woman was the mother of the two children and that recovery efforts are underway.

Police say the three were on Luna Island in Niagara Falls, N.Y., when they crossed over a guardrail. The incident occurred just after 9 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 30.

“The investigation has determined that this incident was intentional in nature, though the circumstances remain under investigation,” police said in a statement. “New York State Park Police and State Police search/rescue efforts were conducted with negative results.”

There is no threat to public safety, police said.
