‘Materialists,’ in theaters June 13, stars Dakota Johnson as a professional matchmaker in a tricky love triangle

Chris Evans, Pedro Pascal and Dakota Johnson are caught in a tricky love triangle in their new movie.

Writer-director Celine Song’s rom-com Materialists(in theaters June 13), her follow-up to the Oscar-nominated Past Lives, casts Johnson, 35, as Lucy, a modern matchmaker whose professional life grows complicated after her own love life is thrust into the spotlight when she meets a potential new lover named Randy (Pascal, 49) at an event and coincidentally reconnects with her ex John (Evans, 43) the same night.

As the highly anticipated A24 movie’s newly released trailer indicates, that toxicity stems from Evans and Pascal’s characters vying for Lucy’s affection. John is shown asking Lucy if she intends on marrying Randy, whom seemingly wants to marry Lucy — and the complicated love triangle even puts a strain on Lucy’s confidence in her career.

“A young, ambitious New York City matchmaker finds herself torn between the perfect match and her imperfect ex,” reads an official synopsis for the film.

Marin Ireland, Louisa Jacobson, Zoe Winters, Sawyer Spielberg and Dasha Nekrasova also star. Materialists marks only the second feature film from Song, 36, who broke out with 2022’s Past Lives after finding success as a New York City playwright.

Also among distributor A24’s recent titles are On Becoming a Guinea Fowl (in theaters March 7), Ayo Edebiri and John Malkovich’s Opus (March 14) and the Jenna Ortega- and Paul Rudd-starring Death of a Unicorn (March 28).

Evans last appeared in Red One and Deadpool & Wolverine and will next feature in Ethan Coen’s Honey Don’t! His fellow Marvel star Pascal makes his debut as Reed Richards a.k.a. Mister Fantastic in The Fantastic Four: First Steps (in theaters July 25), and returns for a second season of HBO’s The Last of Us (premiering April 13). Johnson, meanwhile, also has upcoming marriage comedy Splitsville in the works.

Materialists is in theaters June 13.
