Renowned Nigerian writer, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie took to Instagram to criticize US president Donald Trump and Brazil President Jair Bolsonaro for the way they’ve handled the COVID-19 pandemic.
Chimamanda shared a video of her listening to music from Brazilian singer Xenia Franca as she disclosed that she’s thinking of Brazil, “a country close to my heart.”
She then pointed out that Brazil and United states now have high numbers of Covid-19 cases.
She blamed this on the leaders of both countries, writing: “Both countries have populist ‘leaders’ full of a vacuous braggadocio that would be funny if it didn’t have life and death consequences for so many. ?
? “Their irresponsibility costs lives. ?Their fragile, brittle egos cost lives.? Real leadership matters.? Love to the people of Brazil.”
Donald Trump has been accused of downplaying the Coronavirus threat in the United States until the disease got out of hand. On his part, Brazil President, Jair Bolsonaro has been dismissive about the health crisis and implored people to ignore state governors who had ordered lockdowns and social distancing measures. He has also been pushing for state governors to ease lockdowns and open the economy.
