London’s mayor hit back in a furious row which has seen the government pushing brutal measures on Londoners to pay for coronavirus – including making 4million more residents pay £15 a day to use a car
The Tory leader had claimed Mr Khan “effectively bankrupted Transport for London before coronavirus had even hit”.
But in TfL’s 2019/20 accounts, Mr Khan said TfL had reduced its “like-for-like” operating deficit by 71% since 2016, when Boris Johnson stopped being mayor of London.
He also wrote that it had raised cash reserves by 16%.
It comes amid a furious political row in the run-up to next year’s elections in the capital, where the Tories want to unseat Mr Khan as mayor.
Allies of Mr Khan say Tory ministers are forcing a string of measures on Londoners to pay for the Covid-19 pandemic, and then trying to blame the Labour mayor for accepting them in exchange for a bailout.
