Christian Brueckner, who is suspected of kidnapping and murdering Madeleine McCann, suffered two broken ribs before a court appearance and was taken to hospital

Christian Brueckner was seen for the first time since being named the prime suspect in the McCann case

These are the first pictures of Christian Bruckner since he was named the chief suspect in the disappearance of Madeleine McCann.

The paedophile was in handcuffs and shackles as he left A&E at a hospital after reportedly suffering two broken ribs before a court appearance on Monday.

Wearing blue jeans, a green jumper and a face mask due to the Covid-19 pandemic, he was seen walking into the back of an ambulance while accompanied by paramedics and security.

It came after Brueckner, 43, was allegedly injured in a cell at a court building in Braunschweig in northern Germany.

His lawyer, Friedrich Fulscher, is said to have filed a formal complaint against guards, and a regional court spokeswoman says an investigation has been launched.

Mr Fulscher claimed Brueckner had been hurt by officials and he would be filing charges, the court insisted he had “fallen over”, the Sun reported.

Monday’s court hearing was part of Brueckner’s appeal against a 21-month sentence for drug dealing. He is being held at a prison in Kiel, about 180 miles from Braunschweig, and will be eligible for parole in early January.

Brueckner is also serving a seven-year sentence for raping a 72-year-old American woman in Praia da Luz, Portugal, in September 2005.

Maddie vanished from her parents’ apartment at the Ocean Club complex about 18 months after that attack. Brueckner is appealing that sentence.
