A “beloved” school counselor and mom of two has been identified as one of the 10 victims of the Alaska plane crash.

Sharon Florence confirmed that her sister, Carol Mooers, 48, was on the flight when speaking with local San Antonio news station KSAT. Florence told the outlet that at the time, Mooers was on her way to pick up students for college tours in Anchorage and Juneau.

The Bering Air Caravan flight was first reported missing when the plane didn’t arrive on time during its journey from Unalakleet to Nome, on Thursday, Feb. 6. The next day, the United States Coast Guard shared that they had found debris matching the missing aircraft. By Saturday, Feb. 8, the Alaska Department of Public Safety announced that all 10 victims had been found and identified.

At a Feb. 7 news conference, a Coast Guard officers said that around 3:18 p.m. on Feb. 6, an event occurred that caused the plane to experience “a rapid loss in elevation and a rapid loss in speed.”

National Transportation Safety Board Chair Jennifer Homendy has said that investigators do not yet know what caused the crash.

The plane crash is the third such deadly accident in the U.S. in the past month.

After losing his mom, Aaron Mooers started a fundraiser to bring her body home to San Antonio.

“She was a mother, wife, sister, and daughter,” Aaron wrote on his Spotfund page. “Outside of family she was an Army Veteran, an Educator, Mentor and Community Leader.”

“This is a very difficult time for everyone,” he wrote on the fundraising page, which has already surpassed the $15,000 goal. “We are doing this because she deserves the best and she had always wanted to be buried with her fellow service members.”

Carol raised her two sons to always “help those in need,” Aaron continued, sharing that the money raised would assist his family in traveling back and forth to Alaska to “recover her, take care of her, and have her services in San Antonio.”

“This is where she always called home,” Aaron added. “Please help us get my amazing Mom home.”

Carol’s family aren’t the only ones grieving her loss. In a Feb. 10 Facebook post, the Unalakleet School issued a statement about their “beloved school counselor.”

“She touched the lives of everyone in our school,” the school wrote. “She spent most of her lunch times with the students and almost every weekend supporting student activities.

“There aren’t enough words to express the magnitude of loss or to honor her many contributions to the Wolfpack,” they continued, sharing that another member of their community, “Alaska State Mentor Teacher” Liane Ryan, was also on the flight.

The school added, “Our hearts go out to Carol’s, Liane’s, the Katchatag family, and all the other family and friends of those who were lost on Flight 445.”
