Mr Johnson and Mr Biden have never spoken – but they are expected to clash on key issues, including Brexit
The call, which was among the first Mr Biden has had with European leaders, was confirmed by the PM on Twitter.
Mr Johnson said: “I just spoke to @JoeBiden to congratulate him on his election. I look forward to strengthening the partnership between our countries and to working with him on our shared priorities – from tackling climate change, to promoting democracy and building back better from the pandemic.”
The call took place at 4pm and lasted 20-25 minutes
It was the first time Mr Johnson has spoken to Mr Biden – a point made pointedly by his predecessor Theresa May this week when she shared an image of her with the former Vice President.
The two leaders are expected to share a tense relationship caused by Mr Johnson’s promise to press ahead with controversial plans to override the Brexit deal after suffering a heavy defeat in the House of Lords last night.
