A CNN senior political data reporter on Friday warned that Kamala Harris’ presidential campaign is going in the “wrong direction” after recent polls provided an update on her favorability rating.
“The momentum of Kamala Harris has stalled,” Harry Enten told news anchor Kate Bolduan during a broadcast on their network.
Enten presented polling numbers showing that Harris, currently the Democratic vice president, had a net favorability rating of minus 15 points in the days prior to her campaign announcement back in July.
That figure rose to minus 4 points in August and later reached 1 point in September before falling to minus 1 this month.
Harris still has a higher net favorability rating than GOP rival Donald Trump — who, despite currently being more popular at this point in a campaign than he’s ever been, is “still underwater” at minus 9 points, according to Enten.
“So, I think there’s this real question in Kamala Harris’ mind, in the campaign’s mind — why is Trump more popular now than he was at this point in 2020 and 2016?” Enten said.
“And I think that is why you’re seeing the sharpening attacks,” he added, referring to Harris’ recent criticisms of Trump.
Enten also noted that Joe Biden was “much more” popular than Trump and “barely won” the 2020 presidential election, while Democrat Hillary Clinton lost in 2016 despite being more popular than her opponent.
“Being more popular than Trump isn’t enough,” Enten said.
“[Harris] wants to continue to see her favorabilities rise. But, in fact, they’re going in the wrong direction at this point.”
