Millions of people with underlying conditions will be told to take extra care as the coronavirus second wave tightens its grip on the country.
Some 2.2 million people who were told to “shield” in the initial outbreak will receive letters and updated guidance advising them to exercise precautions amid the latest surge in Covid-19.
Those at the highest risk of serious illness from the virus will receive specific advice depending on the level of risk in their local area, as disease rates continue to rise.
The “clinically extremely vulnerable” group includes those with conditions affecting the immune system, certain cancers and organ transplant recipients, among others.
But the latest advice should cut the need for people to completely shut themselves away.
However, if cases do rise then the Chief Medical Officer has the power to order a local return to isolation for those at risk.
