There have been a further 199 cases of people with coronavirus reported in Wales, but no new deaths, the latest figures show.

It means 20,644 people have tested positive during the pandemic, Public Health Wales (PHW) has said.

The number of deaths in Wales remains at 1,603 – including two deaths reported on Saturday.

A total of 8,784 tests were carried out on Saturday.

The number of people who have been tested in Wales is 456,192, with 435,548 testing negative.

What do the stats tell us in Wales?
How has the coronavirus wave looked across Wales?

The majority of new cases (80) were in the Cwm Taf Morgannwg health board area, which covers Rhondda Cynon Taf – an area which followed Caerphilly county into lockdown on Thursday, Merthyr Tydfil and Bridgend.

However, there were just three new cases recorded in Merthyr.

There were 40 new cases in the Aneurin Bevan health board area, which covers Caerphilly county, and 24 in the area covered by Cardiff and Vale University Health Board.

Rise in hospital admissions
Dr Giri Shankar, from PHW, said: “We are continuing to see a steady increase in cases in many communities across Wales, and our investigations show that many of these have been transmitted due to a lack of social distancing.

“We are also seeing an increase in the number of people who are seriously ill and have been admitted to hospital with Covid-19.

“We are concerned that much of the good work conducted over the past few months is at risk of going to waste.

“If the situation continues to worsen, we may find ourselves at the same levels of infection that we experienced earlier this year in March and April; and with that comes the potential for more extended restrictions to be imposed nationally.”

Analysis by the ONS has estimated that in the week to 10 September, 1,500 people in Wales had coronavirus, 300 more than the week before.

This is about 0.05%, or one in 2,000 people.

PHW’s figures mostly involve hospital deaths and only include cases when the virus was confirmed in a laboratory test.

The figures do not include deaths of residents from Powys in hospitals in England, although these are included in Office for National Statistics (ONS) data.

Latest weekly ONS figures showed there had been four deaths involving Covid-19 in Wales registered in the week ending 4 September, taking the total to 2,569.

The postcode search has been updated to replace data for health boards in Scotland with data for local councils. In England, data for county councils has been replaced with data for district councils. Figures for boroughs and unitary authorities remain unchanged. Last updated 4 September.
