Former Dutch international, Quincy Promes has been charged for allegedly smuggling 1,370 kilograms of cocaine, the country’s public prosecutor’s office has announced.

The 31-year-old is alleged to have been involved in importing two batches of cocaine of around 650kg and 713kg, respectively.

Both batches were intercepted in Antwerp in January 2020, as reported by the Dutch newspaper NOS.

Promes and another 31-year-old Dutchman have both been accused of importing cocaine through the port in Belgium.

Dutch media have reported that a preliminary hearing will take place on June 5.

Promes’ lawyer Robert Malewicz declined to comment on the charges when asked by Dutch newspaper Het Parool.

‘I will provide a further explanation during Monday’s hearing,’ Malewicz said.

The forward will not attend the hearing due to playing for Spartak Moscow, with the Russian Premier League season set to conclude on Saturday.

Promes is also facing a charge of aggravated assault after was accused of injuring a cousin in the knee with a knife.

The fight occurred during a family event in Amsterdam in July 2020.

The Dutch Public Prosecutor’s Office requested a two-year prison sentence in March.

Promes had initially been charged with attempted murder, but the judge deemed there was no evidence to prove attempted murder or attempted manslaughter.

The footballer had previously denied the allegations but has since been heard confessing to the stabbing in a police wire.

The conclusion of this case is expected to be heard on Monday.

Promes had been playing for Ajax at the time of the incident, before moving to Spartak Moscow in 2021.

It marked the second time Promes had joined the Russian side having played for the club for four years between 2014 and 2018.

Promes has also played for FC Twente, Go Ahead Eagles and the Spanish side Sevilla during his career.

The forward has been capped 50 times by the Netherlands since making his international debut back in 2014, scoring seven goals.
