- Now the bride wants to disinvite the groom’s best friend from the wedding, which is a month away
A bride-to-be is upset after her fiancé’s best friend confessed her feelings for him.
In a post from Reddit’s “Am I the A——?” forum, the bride, 23, explained that she wants to disinvite the best friend, 27, of her fiancé, 28, from their destination wedding next month. Although it’s short notice, the bride now feels that it would be inappropriate for her to be there because she learned that she’s secretly always been in love with the groom.
During her bachelorette party, the bride said that everyone was drinking heavily. The poster eventually needed to use the bathroom, but when she got closer she “heard voices and whimpering like someone was crying.” That’s when she eavesdropped on a conversation between the groom’s sister and his best friend.
“[She told her] that this should be her and that she doesn’t understand why he would want to be with someone like me, when it was always supposed to be them two together. That she always loved him,” the bride recalled. “I sobered the hell up instantly.”
The groom and his best friend have known each other since childhood, and their families are very close, but they were never romantically involved. The bride, who met the groom when she was 19 years old and started dating him a year later, said that his best friend was nice to her from the start, even wanting them to be “best friends.”
“I found it a bit odd only because she barely knew me but I didn’t think much of it because she had been dating my fiancé’s best friend,” she wrote. “We didn’t become best friends because I already have a close friend group and I don’t trust easily but she’s always been cool and never crossed any boundaries.”
The bride never saw a love triangle coming, but now thinks she might have missed clues. For example, the friend never fully explained why she broke up with the groom’s best friend six months ago. She also acted weirdly after the engagement announcement was made last summer.
“Everyone sent their congratulatory praises to us but [her],” the bride explained in her post. “She sent a text the next day (to my fiancé only, not our friend group chat) saying she was happy for him. She was a bit stand offish to me since then but again I never paid attention really became I have my own friends and life.”
Commenters on Reddit understand why the bride wants to uninvite her from the wedding. But they suggest that she first talk to her fiancé about what she overheard.
“Tell him exactly what you heard,” one user commented. “Make sure to emphasize that you didn’t have any problem whatsoever with her or their friendship, but that now that you know that her feelings are not the same as a friend then you need him to have boundaries with her and you don’t feel comfortable with her being at the wedding when all this time she didn’t want to be a supportive friend but instead the bride.”
“This is certainly an awkward and difficult situation,” another person wrote. “I think you should speak to your fiancé about it and go from there. If she can’t be an actual friend and supportive of you both, then she should remove herself from the situation if she’s not over him or having issues of jealousy. Definitely not someone you’d want being a distraction at your wedding.”
