How MUCH Fish Oil Should I Take, Daily?
==================================
This is an important question because dosage matters with everything in life.
For example — how much protein should I eat, carbohydrates, fats, etc.
Or how many milligrams of certain vitamins and minerals, herbs, etc.
As with everything, it also depends on your level of deficiency, as well as your goals.
Of course, more is not always better and there’s a point of diminishing results.
Lastly, fish oil is basically omega 3 fats consisting of EPA and DHA.
Now listen carefully – IF your diet is high in Omega 6 fats, which most people’s are – then you need even MORE fish oil and omega 3 fats, to offset and balance out the omega 6 fats.
As a reminder, omega 6 fats are typically found in most processed foods. These are oils such as
Soybean
Corn
Safflower
Sunflower
Canola
Remember, the more omega 6 fats in your diet, the more omega 3 fats you need.
As far as the dosage, I think the absolutely MINIMUM you should take is 1 gram or 1,000 mg of omega 3 fish oil daily, consisting of a combination of EPA and DHA.
In a second, I’ll tell you the optimal dose and what I personally take.
But first, you need to make sure you know how to read labels correctly, so you don’t get ripped off.
In this first example, you’ll see that 2 pills have 2800 mg of fish oil. But if you look closer, it’s only 2,000 mg for EPA and DHA.
So in reality, each ONE pill is 1,000 mg of omega 3’s consisting of only EPA and DHA.
Here’s another example
Again, 2 pills is 2.5 grams or 2,500 mg of “fish oil”. But only 1,600 mg of it is omega 3’s from EPA + DHA.
So, 1 pill has 800 mg of omega 3’s.
Let’s continue with the dosages.
I think most people should take on average, 3,000 mg of omega 3 fish oil daily. I consider this my default healthy dose.
Now, if you have certain health conditions that you’re concerned about, such as
Cholesterol and triglycerides
Blood pressure
Blood sugar
Inflammation
Improving your mood and happiness
Brain health
Then I suggest 5,000- 6,000 mg daily. This is the dose I take, even though I don’t have any health problems. I just take this much because of all the wonderful health benefits of fish oil.
Again, look at the total omega 3 fats of EPA + DHA
In conclusion, take a minimum of 1000 mg of omega 3 fish oil, ideal for most people is 2-3 grams, and optimal or maximum is around 5-6 grams of omega 3’s.
And take your fish oil with food, preferably at the beginning of the meal.
