fans to give him time to improve the club after their poor start to the new season.

Sportsmail earlier reported that Arteta had the club’s immediate backing, despite growing unrest from fans over the club’s poor start to the campaign that has seen them lose their opening two games to Brentford and Chelsea without scoring a goal.

Arsenal were booed off twice during Sunday’s 2-0 loss to Chelsea and Arteta was confronted by fans as he drove away from the Emirates after a hefty summer spending on young players that stands at £130million.

Speaking ahead of Wednesday night, August 25, Carabao Cup second-round tie at West Brom, the Gunners boss asked fans to be patient.

‘I think they tried to support the team. I know they are disappointed when you lose at home, there has to be some reaction, but this is a project that is going to take some time,’ said the Spaniard.

‘You can see and tell from the recruitment we’ve done and the really young squad we have. It cannot happen overnight.

‘We all want to make it as quick as possible and we know the responsibility for us is to fight with the top teams in every competition. That’s not going to change, we really need (the fans).

‘This group of players really needs them and the club needs them now next to us because we need that confidence, that support and that energy.’
