The British actor stepped out at the Venice Film Festival to debut his new post-war epic at the prestigious event
Joe Alwyn is premiering his latest movie at the 2024 Venice Film Festival.
The British actor, 33, is in Venice, Italy, in support of The Brutalist, a three-hour post-war epic he stars in alongside Adrien Brodyand Felicity Jones.
The film, directed by Brady Corbet (Vox Lux), centers on Hungarian Jewish architect László Tót (Brody), who survives the Holocaust and sets out to America to rebuild his life. It had its world premiere at the event on Saturday, Aug. 31, and is one of the 21 films competing for the festival’s prestigious Golden Lion Award.
The Brutalist marks Alwyn’s first film since this year’s Kinds of Kindness, which saw him reunite with Emma Stone and director Yorgos Lanthimos following 2018’s Oscar-winning The Favourite.
Alwyn’s appearance in Venice comes over two months after he broke his silence about his breakup from ex Taylor Swift in an interview with The Sunday Times Style. (PEOPLE confirmed that the duo split in April 2023, following six years of dating.)
Reflecting on his breakup from Swift, 34, Alwyn told the outlet, “What is unusual and abnormal in this situation is that, one week later, it’s suddenly in the public domain and the outside world is able to weigh in.”

“So you have something very real suddenly thrown into a very unreal space: tabloids, social media, press, where it is then dissected, speculated on, pulled out of shape beyond recognition,” he continued. “And the truth is, to that last point, there is always going to be a gap between what is known and what is said. I have made my peace with that.”
The actor noted that he and the pop star “mutually” decided to “keep the more private details of our relationship private,” adding, “It was never something to commodify and I see no reason to change that now.”
As for his romantic life, Alwyn didn’t divulge whether he is seeing anyone new: “I’m sure you can appreciate, given the level of noise and scrutiny about my past relationship, why I wouldn’t want to just open the door to things like that right now.”
Back in April, a source said that Alwyn is “dating and happy,” adding, “He’s a great guy and not into drama in any way.”
The actor has “moved on” from Swift and “certainly doesn’t talk poorly about her,” the insider continued. “He was in love with her, and it just didn’t work out.”
The source added of his career, “Joe loves acting, but can’t stand the attention that comes with it. He’s not comfortable in the spotlight.”
Kinds of Kindness is available on digital Aug. 27, then on Blu-ray and DVD Oct. 8. The Brutalist does not yet have a release date.
