John Krasinski and Natalie Portman are on the hunt for the source of eternal life in director Guy Ritchie’s Fountain of Youth.

The first trailer for the movie — streaming on Apple TV+ on Friday, May 23 — shows estranged siblings Luke and Charlotte Purdue (Krasinski and Portman) reconnecting and joining forces to look for the mythical spring.

Their quest takes care-free treasure hunter Luke and buttoned-up gallery curator Charlotte — the children of a late archaeologist — all over the world, from England to Egypt and beyond. Along the way, the siblings butt heads while trying to focus on their mission.

“I love the initial juxtaposition between Luke and Charlotte — this idea of the adventurous spirit and the person who is always playing it safe,” Krasinski says in production notes for the film.

Ritchie says the Purdues’ dynamic offers a nice twist to the adventure movie. “With brothers and sisters, there will always be squabbling. And, as far as I’m concerned, squabbling is the best version of arguing. Brothers and sisters can say things to each other that no one else can. You can warm your hands off that kind of banter.”

The whole adventure is funded by a mysterious billionaire named Owen Carver (Domhnall Gleeson), who has an ulterior motive for helping the Purdues on their globe-trotting pursuit.

And as much as the Purdues, Carver and the other members of their crew, played by Carmen Ejogo and Laz Alonso, want to find the Fountain of Youth, there are shadowy people who want to stop them no matter what. But the danger doesn’t put off the team, especially not Luke.

“For me, Luke is looking for the Fountain because it was something his father was looking for,” says Krasinski.

“His father was an adventurer who valued the journey over anything else,” he adds. “I thought that was such an interesting take on adventure; that you should live life and every experience to its fullest.”

Fountain of Youth, which also stars Stanley Tucciand Eiza González, is on Apple TV+ May 23.
