An Indiana man is being hailed as a “good Samaritan” for finding two babies who were kidnapped during a car theft.
On Monday, Dec. 2, Robert Deane went to collect a package from outside his home in southeast Indianapolis, when he spotted two baby car seats sitting inside a ditch. He then walked over and discovered two baby girls inside the chairs who had been taken in the stolen car earlier that day.
“I’d do it again,” Deane told USA Today. “If you see something, like a baby in a ditch, say something (and) do something.”
While it’s currently unknown how long the babies were outside, the weather was reportedly as low as 27 degrees. Deane’s home was also around four miles away from the location of the theft, reported USA Today.
“It’s cold out here,” Indianapolis police spokesman William Young told the outlet. “Who knows what could have happened if this particular individual was not able to come outside. It’s extremely cold, and we’re still in our early stages of trying to figure out who was responsible for this.”
The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department stated on X (formerly known as Twitter) on Monday that they had been trying to locate a vehicle that had been stolen with a 4-month-old and 5-month-old baby inside.

“The plate number on the vehicle is 364CMU. If you see this vehicle, please call 911 immediately,” they added about the stolen car, which was taken from a home at East Gimber Street at around 11 a.m. that day, reported CBS4 Indy.
Police were alerted that two babies were inside the stolen 2013 Hyundai Sonata before they discovered the vehicle and found it was empty. This happened around the same time Deane called authorities to state he’d found the two girls, added CBS4 Indy.

“Below are photos of the two baby girls who are in the vehicle. The vehicle is a silver 2013 Hyundai Sonata,” Indianapolis police wrote on X as they shared two photos of the babies.
According to CBS4 Indy, the police are still searching for the person who stole the vehicle.
“He did what any good person would do,” Young added to USA Today about Deane. “He got those infants to shelter. This is an outcome that we wanted. I can’t thank that good Samaritan enough. We don’t have a suspect in custody, but that will be our next priority is figuring out who is responsible for this particular incident.”
