A successful campaign by Martin Lewis and the Money and Mental Health Policy Institute charity means the rules of debt collection are about to change – and with millions struggling the timing couldn’t be better

Martin Lewis is celebrating after the Government agreed to change the law to better protect people in debt.

And with millions of people struggling as a result of coronavirus, the timing couldn’t be better.

“It’s no exaggeration to say that this change could save lives,” Martin said.

“Over 100,000 in England attempt to take their lives each year due to debts, and four times that consider it. So we’re delighted the Government has agreed to back this element of our campaign and change the default demand rules.”

The victory surrounds the threatening language and outdated advice in letters sent to people struggling.
