Meghan Markle and Prince Harry tied the knot in front of their family and friends, including the Queen, Kate Middleton, Prince William, Charles, George and Amal Clooney and Victoria Beckham

Meghan Markle has spoken out for what she believes in her entire life. She’s campaigned against sexism, used her voice to give other women the confidence to use theirs and been vocal with her opinions on politics and other issues.

So it’s hardly surprising that when it came to the speeches on her wedding day she didn’t let her new husband Prince Harry do all the talking.

As is becoming increasingly popular with brides around the world, she addressed her guests at her royal wedding back in 2018, making a series of sweet comments about Harry, her friends and her family.

But a new book about the Sussexes claims that Meghan also made reference to the fact she hadn’t spoken out in a while in her speech, an apparent dig at the royal life she was about to embark on.

In their biography, Finding Freedom, Omid Scobie and Carolyn Durand write: “A first for a royal bride, the move reinforced the idea that this American was no typical duchess.

“‘You could literally hear a pin drop’, said a close confidant, who described the speech as a momentous occasion even for the Americans.

“‘For her to have been quiet for as long as she had, and then have this really safe space where she could give these heartfelt remarks, it was a really special moment’, the source said.

“‘She spent so many years, whether on campus, on TV, or advocating for women to be empowered, speaking out. And she’s respected that.

“‘She does have a lot of respect for the family and the institution that she has joined. Bit it’s just a different way of living. We’d missed hearing her speak’.

“And apparently Meghan felt the same way, because she laughed, ‘I know it’s been a while’.”

During her speech, the new Duchess of Sussex thanked the Queen for welcoming her into the family and Prince Charles for stepping in at the last minute and walking her down the aisle.

Once in the royal family, Meghan started to get used to her new position and the expectation to remain quiet.

However, it has reportedly been difficult for her to adapt, and an insider claimed she was heard muttering “don’t I have a voice” during an engagement with the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge.
