The Nigerian Boxing Board of Control has organised a seminar to uplift the competence and knowledge base of local ring officials while fostering interest among aspiring referees and judges in Nigeria’s professional boxing landscape.

In a bid to enhance the quality of officiating in professional boxing matches, Remi Aboderin, the General Secretary of NBBofC, has invited distinguished international boxing referee/judge Daniel van de Wiele deom from Belgium to headline the seminar.

With the experience of overseeing more than 3,700 professional bouts across all five continents, Van de Wiele stands as a beacon of expertise and he is expected to arrive in Nigeria December 22.

“Bringing in Mr. Van De Wiele is a significant step toward ensuring that our boxing officials are well-versed and up-to-date with the latest developments in ring officiating,” Aboderin told our correspondent.

“This effort not only reassures our professional boxers but also opens doors for boxing enthusiasts keen on joining the officiating ranks in Nigeria.”

The seminar will encompass various segments, including a corner care and hand-wrapping workshop conducted by the esteemed Technical Officer, Yinka Adeoti.

“Our boxers will also receive guidance on the recording of their fights on BoxRec, the premier global repository for boxers’ records. Understanding how points are accumulated and the importance of facing opponents who elevate their points is crucial. BoxRec has become the go-to platform for matchmakers, promoters, and managers when considering matchups within the same weight category,” Aboderin said.
