  • Governor Nyesom Wike said greedy and desperate politicians have turned NDDC into “cash cow”
  • The Rivers governor also stated that all politicians want to take control of the agency
  • Wike said technocrats should be engaged if NDDC must serve the purpose of its establishment

Nyesom Wike, Rivers state governor, said the purpose for the creation of Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) has been upturned as politicians now use the agency to abuse the public trust.

Wike made this saddening disclosure amid ongoing probe into the commission by National Assembly (NASS) over alleged financial infractions of over N80 billion.

He added that NDDC was created to look into the plight of the oil-producing region but its Interim Management Committee (IMC), in collaboration with some greedy politicians, has made the commission a “cash cow.”

The Rivers state governor, who spoke on live television on Tuesday, August 4, said NDDC spent N10 billion to prevent him from being reelected in 2019.

“Everyone knows that the NDDC was set up for the development of the region. Unfortunately, they have turned it into a different thing. NDDC is a cash cow for politicians.

“When they are talking about probing the IMC, I say why only the IMC? During my own re-election period, the NDDC brought N10 billion cash to fight against us,” Wike said.

The governor further stated that “every politician wants to control the NDDC” and admonished that the government at the centre must ensure that only technocrats are brought on board to control NDDC.
