NSCDC confirms crushing of teacher to death in Osun

The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, NSCDC, has confirmed the death of a teacher in Ode-Omu, Osun State.

According to a statement by Adeleke Kehinde, the spokesperson of the Osun NSCDC, the teacher, identified as Okunola K, was crushed to death on Jan. 16, by a driver who was travelling in a car from Ibadan heading to Osogbo, Osun State.

The deceased, who teaches at St. Michael Grammar School, Obada, Ode-Omu along Gbongan-Osogbo road, had gone to the market to buy cassava peels.

Adeleke added that while trying to board a motorcycle, a car suddenly ran into the market and hit the teacher, killing him on the spot, which led to violent reactions from the residents.

An angry mob gathered after the accident and burnt the driver’s Toyota Corolla as the driver fled the scene.

Adeleke said: “The said car was coming from Ibadan to Osogbo when the driver lost control due to a mechanical fault. The victim was a teacher in a school in Obada Area, Odeomu.

“The victim bought cassava peels at the Obada Market and was attempting to board a motorcycle when the car hit him.”

The motorcyclist escaped by jumping off the motorcycle but the teacher was not so lucky.

Adeleke continued: “After the accident, which occurred Tuesday, the driver of the car reportedly fled the scene, as angry residents and people in the vicinity set the car ablaze immediately they confirmed the passing away of the victim.

“The whereabouts of the driver is still unknown.”

Adeleke said that the Osun NSCDC State Commandant, Michael Adaralewa, also implored residents to assist law enforcement agencies in keeping roads in the state safe by obeying laws.

He urged motorists to ensure strict adherence to traffic laws.
