An entrepreneur once dubbed the ‘world’s youngest female self-made billionaire’ faces two decades in prison as she awaits a fraud trial.
Elizabeth Holmes, 37, is accused of lying to patients and investors of her medical tech start-up, Theranos, which at one point was valued at £6.6billion.https://googleads.g.doubleclick.net/pagead/ads?gdpr=0&us_privacy=1—&client=ca-pub-2427099653703778&output=html&h=300&adk=2141876619&adf=667904977&pi=t.aa~a.1834861711~i.11~rp.4&w=360&lmt=1630579034&num_ads=1&rafmt=1&armr=3&sem=mc&pwprc=4779063894&psa=1&ad_type=text_image&format=360×300&url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.lindaikejisblog.com%2F2021%2F9%2Fone-time-billionaire-elizabeth-holmes-facing-20-years-in-prison-for-fraud.html&flash=0&fwr=1&pra=3&rh=275&rw=330&rpe=1&resp_fmts=3&sfro=1&wgl=1&fa=27&adsid=ChEI8OzBiQYQ0vfzjrKT7LaHARJIAG0sWoj0F1YejlDBl3IEpt6Kk_7unvToRcu4Nk285WVdj1rhX0MPZIldDAQ4m5bETwjiTpA9Uc9UMTNDWS9xC60F5vgyoHt-&uach=WyJBbmRyb2lkIiwiOSIsIiIsIkluZmluaXggWDY1MEIiLCI5Mi4wLjQ1MTUuMTE1IixbXSxudWxsLG51bGwsbnVsbF0.&tt_state=W3siaXNzdWVyT3JpZ2luIjoiaHR0cHM6Ly9hdHRlc3RhdGlvbi5hbmRyb2lkLmNvbSIsInN0YXRlIjo3fV0.&dt=1630579033299&bpp=20&bdt=8597&idt=-M&shv=r20210830&mjsv=m202108310101&ptt=9&saldr=aa&abxe=1&cookie=ID%3D6f62d75ac2f0c0c6-2251d019a8c80035%3AT%3D1622665487%3ART%3D1622665487%3AS%3DALNI_MZ85Ep3SvTaGfc8Juk8Onrd6Hwi6g&prev_fmts=0x0%2C360x300&nras=3&correlator=4534792685630&frm=20&pv=1&ga_vid=1187515804.1622665486&ga_sid=1630579029&ga_hid=1072328836&ga_fc=0&u_tz=60&u_his=5&u_java=0&u_h=800&u_w=360&u_ah=800&u_aw=360&u_cd=24&u_nplug=0&u_nmime=0&adx=0&ady=1337&biw=360&bih=616&scr_x=0&scr_y=400&eid=44747621%2C31062313%2C21067496%2C31062297&oid=3&psts=AGkb-H-wllPTXT3cfVHv84HcsngWZmdxMt59O3DbH2GPjYNQJ6JcBJHTyMudtEGxfkskaraozS__S0CHeT0&pvsid=3336558718527561&pem=777&ref=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.lindaikejisblog.com%2F&eae=0&fc=1408&brdim=0%2C0%2C0%2C0%2C360%2C0%2C360%2C720%2C360%2C720&vis=1&rsz=%7C%7Cs%7C&abl=NS&fu=1152&bc=31&jar=2021-09-01-18&ifi=3&uci=a!3&btvi=1&fsb=1&xpc=BFN9WcxgbB&p=https%3A//www.lindaikejisblog.com&dtd=867
Theranos promised to run hundreds of medical tests using a single drop of blood using its technology, but it never lived up to expectations, and may never have worked at all.
Holmes is alleged to have overhyped claims about the company’s financial performance, before it went bust in 2018.
Her major investors included Rupert Murdoch, who put in $121million and the Walmart’s Walton family, who invested $150million (£109million).
More than $700million (£500million) was put in altogether by venture capitalists, but this proved to be totally worthless when the company collapsed.https://googleads.g.doubleclick.net/pagead/ads?gdpr=0&us_privacy=1—&client=ca-pub-2427099653703778&output=html&h=300&adk=2141876619&adf=3366938152&pi=t.aa~a.1834861711~i.31~rp.4&w=360&lmt=1630579034&num_ads=1&rafmt=1&armr=3&sem=mc&pwprc=4779063894&psa=1&ad_type=text_image&format=360×300&url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.lindaikejisblog.com%2F2021%2F9%2Fone-time-billionaire-elizabeth-holmes-facing-20-years-in-prison-for-fraud.html&flash=0&fwr=1&pra=3&rh=275&rw=330&rpe=1&resp_fmts=3&sfro=1&wgl=1&fa=27&adsid=ChEI8OzBiQYQ0vfzjrKT7LaHARJIAG0sWoj0F1YejlDBl3IEpt6Kk_7unvToRcu4Nk285WVdj1rhX0MPZIldDAQ4m5bETwjiTpA9Uc9UMTNDWS9xC60F5vgyoHt-&uach=WyJBbmRyb2lkIiwiOSIsIiIsIkluZmluaXggWDY1MEIiLCI5Mi4wLjQ1MTUuMTE1IixbXSxudWxsLG51bGwsbnVsbF0.&tt_state=W3siaXNzdWVyT3JpZ2luIjoiaHR0cHM6Ly9hdHRlc3RhdGlvbi5hbmRyb2lkLmNvbSIsInN0YXRlIjo3fV0.&dt=1630579033299&bpp=18&bdt=8596&idt=-M&shv=r20210830&mjsv=m202108310101&ptt=9&saldr=aa&abxe=1&cookie=ID%3D6f62d75ac2f0c0c6-2251d019a8c80035%3AT%3D1622665487%3ART%3D1622665487%3AS%3DALNI_MZ85Ep3SvTaGfc8Juk8Onrd6Hwi6g&prev_fmts=0x0%2C360x300%2C360x300&nras=4&correlator=4534792685630&frm=20&pv=1&ga_vid=1187515804.1622665486&ga_sid=1630579029&ga_hid=1072328836&ga_fc=0&u_tz=60&u_his=5&u_java=0&u_h=800&u_w=360&u_ah=800&u_aw=360&u_cd=24&u_nplug=0&u_nmime=0&adx=0&ady=2492&biw=360&bih=616&scr_x=0&scr_y=400&eid=44747621%2C31062313%2C21067496%2C31062297&oid=3&psts=AGkb-H-wllPTXT3cfVHv84HcsngWZmdxMt59O3DbH2GPjYNQJ6JcBJHTyMudtEGxfkskaraozS__S0CHeT0&pvsid=3336558718527561&pem=777&ref=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.lindaikejisblog.com%2F&eae=0&fc=1408&brdim=0%2C0%2C0%2C0%2C360%2C0%2C360%2C720%2C360%2C720&vis=1&rsz=%7C%7Cs%7C&abl=NS&fu=1152&bc=31&jar=2021-09-01-18&ifi=4&uci=a!4&btvi=2&fsb=1&xpc=PER7ZWffT9&p=https%3A//www.lindaikejisblog.com&dtd=925
Holmes started promoting her product from 2013, when she was just 29 years old, and she ended up on the covers of business magazines such as Forbes, Fortune and Inc.
The college dropout’s black turtleneck led to her being compared to the late Apple boss Steve Jobs.
She gained such a reputation she was even appointed as a presidential ambassador for global entrepreneurship by Barack Obama.
Holmes’ medical tech start-up, Theranos, quickly lost steam after revelations that its “breakthrough: blood-testing machine, “Edison,” didn’t work as Holmes had described. It was shown to produce dangerously inaccurate results in tests run for actual patients.https://googleads.g.doubleclick.net/pagead/ads?gdpr=0&us_privacy=1—&client=ca-pub-2427099653703778&output=html&h=300&adk=2141876619&adf=965097895&pi=t.aa~a.1834861711~i.51~rp.4&w=360&lmt=1630579034&num_ads=1&rafmt=1&armr=3&sem=mc&pwprc=4779063894&psa=1&ad_type=text_image&format=360×300&url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.lindaikejisblog.com%2F2021%2F9%2Fone-time-billionaire-elizabeth-holmes-facing-20-years-in-prison-for-fraud.html&flash=0&fwr=1&pra=3&rh=275&rw=330&rpe=1&resp_fmts=3&sfro=1&wgl=1&fa=27&adsid=ChEI8OzBiQYQ0vfzjrKT7LaHARJIAG0sWoj0F1YejlDBl3IEpt6Kk_7unvToRcu4Nk285WVdj1rhX0MPZIldDAQ4m5bETwjiTpA9Uc9UMTNDWS9xC60F5vgyoHt-&uach=WyJBbmRyb2lkIiwiOSIsIiIsIkluZmluaXggWDY1MEIiLCI5Mi4wLjQ1MTUuMTE1IixbXSxudWxsLG51bGwsbnVsbF0.&tt_state=W3siaXNzdWVyT3JpZ2luIjoiaHR0cHM6Ly9hdHRlc3RhdGlvbi5hbmRyb2lkLmNvbSIsInN0YXRlIjo3fV0.&dt=1630579033299&bpp=17&bdt=8596&idt=-M&shv=r20210830&mjsv=m202108310101&ptt=9&saldr=aa&abxe=1&cookie=ID%3D6f62d75ac2f0c0c6-2251d019a8c80035%3AT%3D1622665487%3ART%3D1622665487%3AS%3DALNI_MZ85Ep3SvTaGfc8Juk8Onrd6Hwi6g&prev_fmts=0x0%2C360x300%2C360x300%2C360x300&nras=5&correlator=4534792685630&frm=20&pv=1&ga_vid=1187515804.1622665486&ga_sid=1630579029&ga_hid=1072328836&ga_fc=0&u_tz=60&u_his=5&u_java=0&u_h=800&u_w=360&u_ah=800&u_aw=360&u_cd=24&u_nplug=0&u_nmime=0&adx=0&ady=3881&biw=360&bih=616&scr_x=0&scr_y=400&eid=44747621%2C31062313%2C21067496%2C31062297&oid=3&psts=AGkb-H-wllPTXT3cfVHv84HcsngWZmdxMt59O3DbH2GPjYNQJ6JcBJHTyMudtEGxfkskaraozS__S0CHeT0&pvsid=3336558718527561&pem=777&ref=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.lindaikejisblog.com%2F&eae=0&fc=1408&brdim=0%2C0%2C0%2C0%2C360%2C0%2C360%2C720%2C360%2C720&vis=1&rsz=%7C%7Cs%7C&abl=NS&fu=1152&bc=31&jar=2021-09-01-18&ifi=5&uci=a!5&btvi=3&fsb=1&xpc=4XINAk9DSZ&p=https%3A//www.lindaikejisblog.com&dtd=967
However, Holmes is expected to testify that some of her statements and actions were the result of abuse inflicted by the company’s chief operating officer and her secret lover, Ramesh ‘Sunny’ Balwani, 56.
She will claim her former partner controlled what she wore, what she ate and when she slept.
Her lawyers argue she believed everything about her technology to be true but that Balwani’s “manipulation” impaired her judgement.
Balwani is facing multiple fraud charges in a separate trial and his lawyers have denied Holmes’s allegations, branding them “outrageous, salacious and inflammatory”
