Quarterback Patrick Mahomes and other Kansas City Chiefs players expressed their condolences after a shooting Wednesday afternoon during the NFL team’s Super Bowl parade in Kansas City, Missouri.
“Praying for Kansas City,” Mahomes posted on X, formerly Twitter, following the incident, which came just days after the Chiefs won the Super Bowl.
Tight end Travis Kelce also offered his support after the shooting.
“My heart is with all who came out to celebrate with us and have been affected,” Kelce wrote on X.
At least one person was killed and at least 22 others were injured. The person killed has been identified as Lisa Lopez-Galvan, a DJ for Kansas City radio station KKFI who hosted a show called “Taste of Tejano.”
Of those injured, eight were listed with immediate life-threatening injuries and seven had injuries that were described as not immediately life-threatening, officials said.
There were at least 11 injured children, nine with gunshot wounds, Children’s Mercy Hospital told HuffPost. The children, ages 6 to 15, were all expected to recover from the wounds, ESPN reported.
The team left as a unit, according to NBC News, which cited Jackson County Legislator Manny Abarca, who sat three rows from the stage with his daughter. Abarca said the team left hurriedly, “crying and screaming.”
Everyone on the Chiefs team was safe and accounted for after the shooting, law enforcement authorities and the team confirmed Wednesday.
Three suspects were taken into custody Wednesday, according to police.
In a statement posted on X, the team said it was “truly saddened” by the “senseless act of violence.”
“Our hearts go out to the victims, their families, and all of Kansas City,” the team wrote, adding that all players, coaches and staff members, as well as their families, were safe.
Drue Tranquill, a linebacker for the Chiefs, wrote in response to the shooting: “Please join me in prayer for all the victims in this heinous act. Pray that doctors & first responders would have steady hands & that all would experience full healing.”
Armani Watts, who was on the team in 2019 when the Chiefs won that year’s Super Bowl, posted, “Praying for KC man.”
Donovan Smith, an offensive tackle for the Chiefs, posted, “Praying for everyone today in Kansas City.”
Brittany Mahomes, Patrick Mahomes’ wife, posted on Instagram that “shooting is never the answer.”
“Praying for Kansas City and America in general, this is rough,” she said.
Khalen Saunders, who played for the Chiefs from 2019 to 2022, wrote: “Praying for KC. Praying for the ones affected and their families.”
Trey Smith, who joined the Chiefs in 2021, wrote on X: “My thoughts and prayers … are with everyone affected by today’s incidents—a huge thank you to the first responders who ran towards the sound of danger. You’re the ones who should be celebrated today.”
Creed Humphrey, a center for the Chiefs, shared Smith’s post and wrote, “Praying for everyone involved.”
Albert Breer, an NFL reporter, wrote after the shooting that Chiefs players were said to have helped calm children down.
“The Chiefs left the parade in busses, and in shock,” Breer posted on X. “I’m told players were UNBELIEVABLE [in] calming panicked kids down. Blaine Gabbert … [Trey] Smith, Austin Reiter, Chris [Oladokun] … all rallied.”
