Sean “Diddy” Combs’ lawyer says that the music mogul wants to testify at his pending federal trial.
Marc Agnifilo made the claim in an interview with TMZ for an upcoming documentary, The Downfall of Diddy: The Indictment.
Combs was indicted on charges of sex trafficking, racketeering and transportation to engage in prostitution on Sept. 17 and is currently being held in federal custody awaiting trial after two different judges denied a bail proposal. He has pleaded not guilty.
“I don’t know that I could keep him off the stand,” Agnifilo told TMZ. “I think he is very eager to tell his story.”
No date has been set for Combs’ trial.
When asked about the video of Combs appearing to violently assault his ex, Cassie, in a Los Angeles hotel in 2016, which could possibly be shown during a prospective trial, Agnifilo said his client wants to address “every part of his story, including what you see in the video.”
“I expect it’s going to be explained by the both of us,” Agnifilo said.
The indictment against Combs centers around “freak offs,” which prosecutors have described as elaborate sex performances arranged by Combs. Women were allegedly forced or coerced into participating with male sex workers, sometimes for multiple days, according to the indictment.
If Combs does ultimately testify, he would be subject to a potentially damaging cross-examination by prosecutors.
“He has his story,” Agnifilo reiterated. “And he has a story, I think, only he can tell in the way he can tell it in real time. And it’s a human story, it’s a story of love, it’s a story of hurt, it’s a story of heartbreak.”
Combs is next due in court in early October. He is currently in custody at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn. Sources tells PEOPLE he is currently housed in the same area of the facility as disgraced FTX founder Sam Bankman-Fried.
