Sleeping in the same house as a snorer can be a nightmare – and an expert has revealed that being stuck in lockdown may only be making the problem worse.about:blank

Stephen Makinde, an osteopath and clinical director of Perfect Balance Clinic, claims the feeling of being trapped in our surroundings can manifest itself as a physical restriction with our breathing.null

He says emotional struggles, which may be heightened by the current situation, can cause people to snore and are often overlooked.

He told LadBible : “People can have emotional things that are locked inside them, like if they’re in a bad relationship, or believe they can’t open up about something, feeling congested and locked up, such as in the current situation where life is restricted.

“That’s potentially going to manifest itself as a restriction or obstruction of their airways because their subconscious is telling them to restrict themselves perhaps, albeit the mechanism not being fully understood.

“So it may present as snoring in some people. It’s very individual for every person.”

Stephen said other factors including changes in diet or hormones being affected can also cause people to snore – adding it’s a side people ‘don’t address enough’.

He said he often works with clients to pin-point what may have triggered their snoring, and ‘pretty much every time’ it’s something emotional which has led to it occuring.

Sitting at a computer all day long can affect physical health such a posture and lead to an increase in snoring, but Stephen says it’s often coupled with the emotional side of the stress of the workload and their relationships at home which can trigger it, adding it’s ‘never just one thing’.

Previously, a study found that sleeping next to someone who snores can take a toll on both your physical and mental health – as well as your relationship.
