A teenage boy says he left his own birthday party after his mom used the event to announce her unborn child’s sex.
In a post shared on Reddit, the anonymous 17-year-old teen writes that his mom made the announcement just as “everyone was coming up to a stage to share what they got me for my birthday.”
“My mom was the last one, and she revealed the gender of my new sibling,” he writes. “I was just so annoyed because I already feel my parents’ attention deviating from me. I just wanted one last day about me, but I see I can’t have that anymore.”

After the teen stormed out, other guests said he was “a spoiled brat for walking off,” but his girlfirend said it was “tacky” of his mom to announce her baby news, especially considering she didn’t buy him a gift.
Now, he wants to know from fellow Reddit users if he has “a right to be annoyed” by the turn of events.
Commenters have overwhelmingly sided with the boy, with many writing that the mom chose the wrong time and place to announce her baby’s sex.
One commenter said the poster was right to be annoyed, writing that sex reveals are “one of the tackiest things to do on occasions like weddings, engagement parties, graduations and obviously birthday parties.”
Added another: “It’s really selfish of your mom to turn your birthday into a gender reveal. You deserve to have a day that’s all about you, especially with everything you’ve been feeling. It’s frustrating when people take those special moments and make them about themselves.”
Others suggested it was strange for the teen’s mom to “gift” him the announcement of another child’s sex, writing, “who tf thinks a gender reveal is a gift anyways? so tacky. One more year and then you can leave this behind.”
