About two years ago, Jazmin Anderson was working a shift at Waffle House when she noticed someone familiar walk into the restaurant, surrounded by security.
The celebrity turned out to be none other than singer-songwriter Kevin Jonas. He asked for a table, but Anderson, 31, says that since the restaurant was busy, Jonas, 37, and his group had to wait a little while before they could be seated.
Eventually, they were shown to a table and ordered their food. Throughout the meal, Anderson says she and Jonas had a 25-minute conversation, where they chatted about his career, including his role in Camp Rock. While they chatted, Anderson kept referring to him as his brother and bandmate, Joe Jonas, 35, but at the time, Kevin didn’t say anything. She admits from the start, she couldn’t remember which brother he was.
But, then as they were finishing up, Anderson decided to take a chance and ask if she could take a picture or video with Jonas before he left. He agreed, but as she went to record, something embarrassing happened.
“I started the video and said I was with Joe Jonas, thinking I was,” Anderson, from Phoenix, tells PEOPLE exclusively. “I thought that because when I first addressed him, I called him Joe, and he responded, so I was mistaken.”
“I was mortified,” she adds, noting how during their conversation she kept referring to him as Joe, and he didn’t correct her until she pulled out her camera. “He reacted very well and was very nice about it. He said ‘We all look alike,’ and it’s okay to get mixed up.”
Recently, Anderson decided to share the video on TikTok, and to her surprise, it quickly went viral. While she was nervous at first knowing more than 3.6 million people had watched her mistake, she was happy that she could help make people smile.
Reading through the more than 2,500 comments, she adds that most of them were lighthearted and funny. “All the people who said I seemed very nice and funny made me happy,” she says.
“The most Kevin thing to happen,” one user commented.
“What hurts more is that he’s been getting that his entire life 😭,” someone else wrote.
Another person replied, “You picked the nicest brother to make this mistake with 😭.”
Although this interaction happened a few years ago, Anderson says that to this day, she’s still embarrassed by it, and it’s kept her up at night.
“Don’t take life too seriously and learn to tell the Jonas Brothers apart,” she jokes. “Kevin said they’d shoot the ‘Waffle House’ music video with us, and I think I ruined those chances by not knowing his name!”
