Keira Mae Jones suffered “catastrophic” injuries when she was just two days old and she spent four months in hospital until her life support was switched off and she died this week

This is the heartbreaking first picture of a baby girl who died after she suffered “catastrophic” injuries at just two days old.

A 31-year-old woman and a 38-year-old man, both from Athersley, Barnsley, South Yorkshire, were arrested on suspicion of murdering Keira Mae Jones, and both have since been bailed.

A horrified family friend said the tot spent all of her short life in hospital and, at just four months old, died about 20 minutes after her life support machine was switched off on Monday afternoon.

South Yorkshire Police officers were called to Barnsley Hospital on May 16, about 48 hours after the baby girl was born, after reports that she had severe injuries. The cause of death has not yet been determined.

Family friend Chantelle Robinson told YorkshireLive that she spoke to Keira Mae’s mum Aimee following the infant’s death, and was shocked when she found out a murder investigation had been launched.
