A lady identified as Masidat Kassim has shared her experience of a near-death incident at the newly-opened Giwa Gardens Waterpark in Lagos on Sunday.

Kassim detailed her encounter on her Instagram page, urging the public to exercise caution in visiting the place.

In her Instagram post, @masidat_kassim, recounted, “This morning I went to @giwagardens @keji_giwa with my family to have fun, and it did not end well. The pools are too shallow for the long slides, my daughter hit her head when she went on it and came back to tell me I shouldn’t go…I thought she was exaggerating. I went on the slide and hit my forehead head on the tiles in the pool; I have been to at least 5 water parks in different countries; there is always a rubber laid in all the pools, my head hit the tiles directly, and my lips caught into two.”

Kassim further expressed her disappointment in the waterpark’s safety measures, stating, “The first accident I had was at the river; I tumbled in the tube, and the back of my head hit the tiles. The staff did not even see it as a big deal!! It took them almost 15 mins before I saw one who took me casually to the nurse. The first aid service is wack!!! No good plaster available!”

“Go to Giwa gardens at your own risk” she exclaimed.

She emphasized that her intention was not to seek attention but to alert others about the potential dangers at the waterpark.

Kassim then called on the Lagos State Government, urging them to conduct a thorough quality control check at Giwa Gardens.

Giwa Gardens, located in Sangotedo, Lekki Epe Expressway, opened on December 16, offering a variety of water attractions and rides.

In response to Kassim’s post, the owner, Keji Giwa, apologized for her experience and mentioned an investigation into the incident.

The waterpark wrote under Kassim’s post “First of all we will like to sincerely apologise your experience and I had to go watch the CCTV and yes you are right that you held on tight to the floating foam protector however you let go as soon as you landed which caused you to hurt your lips. The instructions is to keep holding it even when you land in the pool as we followed the guidelines for the slides.”

“We chose to add an extra floating foam protector and the life guard’s instruct you hold on to it, even when you land in the pool.”

“Nonetheless, what happened should never have happened and as a result we will investigate how make sure customers never drop the floating foam protector once they hit the water.”

Giwa Gardens also assured Kassim of a free premium ticket with food and drinks included on her next visit.

The Lagos State Safety Commission has responded to the incident, stating, “Our attention has been drawn to the incident earlier today at @giwagardens water park. Prior to the incident, a safety risk assessment was carried out by officials of the safety commission, and recommendations were issued to ensure the safety of fun-seekers at the facility. This incident is still being investigated, and we encourage public feedback on all issues involving safety.”

According to the Lagos State Safety Commission, the particular slide involved in the incident has been temporarily closed pending the outcome of the investigation.
