The former Vice President pledged to be a “President for all Americans” after his lead in Pennsylvania confirmed that Donald Trump can no longer win. The foul-tempered Republican has, as expected, refused to accept the result

Joe Biden will be the 46th President of the United States after defeating Donald Trump in a vicious and bitterly fought election campaign.

Joyous scenes broke out across the country as news broke that the former Vice President had triumphed over the Republican.

Biden has vowed to be a “President for all Americans” after the election was finally called in his favour – and said it was time for the nation to heal.

But foul-tempered incumbent Donald Trump – who was playing golf when it happened – has refused to accept defeat, releasing a bitter statement saying the election is “far from over”.

In the end, Biden’s route to victory was by flipping back the ‘rust belt’ industrial states of Wisconsin, Michigan and Pennsylvania, which Trump won by slim margins in 2016.
