Kaduna rerun: Protest as suspected thugs kill man trying to prevent ballot snatching

Suspected political thugs have killed a 40-year-old man, Malam Mansur Shafiu during Saturday’s re-election in Rigachikun ward, Igabi Local Government Area of Kaduna State.

According to an eyewitness, Shafiu was stabbed to death by the thugs in his efforts to prevent ballot snatching. 

The killing of Mansur led to protests in the area on Sunday morning by youths who barricaded the Kaduna/Zaria road. 

Their action led to a gridlock on the highway, causing motorists to be stranded before the military was invited to clear the road. .

The spokesperson of the State Police Command, ASP Mansir Hassan, who confirmed the incident on Sunday, said the suspected thugs who snatched election materials at the Tsohon Garin Rigachikun polling unit shot the victim.

The PPRO said the victim was shot in the leg by the thugs and was rushed to the hospital where he died. 

Mansur, a graduate of Sociology from the Kaduna State University, was buried on Sunday morning around 10 am according to Islamic Injunctions in Ragachiku

Reacting to the incident, the winner of the Igabi Federal Constituency bye-election and candidate of the PDP, Hon Hussaini Muhammad Jallo, described the death of Mansur as unfortunate. 

He vowed to ensure that the perpetrators of the heinous crime were not allowed to go unpunished.
