Which Fish Oil Supplement Is The Best

==================================
Today’s topic is from a viewer question and they asked

Dr. Sam, there are so many types and forms of fish oil supplements, what do you take? What do you think is the best. I’m really confused.

Yes, this is a great question because there’s just so much information out there that it really can be confusing. So, let me simplify it for you, as I did for myself

Typically, fish oil supplements will be derived from fish, such as salmon, anchovies, sardines, and mackerel. These will contain the important EPA and DHA omega 3 fats.

So, make sure you read the label and only focus on the total dose and concentration of EPA and DHA omega 3 fats.

Thus, you need to read labels

Again, 2 pills is 2.5 grams or 2,500 mg of “fish oil”. But only 1,600 mg of it is omega 3’s from EPA + DHA.

So, 1 pill has 800 mg of omega 3’s.

There’s another type of marine animal you can get omega 3 fats from and that’s Krill Oil

You can also get EPA and DHA from krill oil, which is small, shrimp-like animals called krill. Krill oil has a distinctive red color, while regular fish oil supplements are typically yellow or gold. Krill oil is usually more expensive than fish oil.

Krill oil has been advertised to be better absorbed than regular fish oil and thus, a lower dose would be needed. However, clinical studies have NOT shown this to be true.

There’s one other option if you happen to NOT like fish oil for whatever reason or you’re a vegan. There’s another great source of plant-based omega 3 fats that contain both EPA and DHA and that’s Algae Oil.

Algae itself includes 40,000 species that range from single-celled microscopic organisms known as microalgae to kelp and seaweed. All types rely on energy from sunlight or ultraviolet (UV) light and carbon dioxide.

Again, make sure you read the labels to see the levels of DHA and EPA concentrations contained in the supplement.

Personally, I take fish oil pills and keep them refrigerated. I take them with meals, preferably at the beginning of the meal.

As far as dose, this depends on many factors – but I typically suggest at least 1-2 grams, to as high as 5-6 grams daily, spread out with your meals.
