The unknown woman, from Barnsley in South Yorkshire, told BBC News she would ‘not be fastened in a house when the government have got it all wrong’ as the area prepares for Tier 3 lockdown measures

A plain-speaking pensioner from Barnsley said she doesn’t ‘give a sod’ about staying at home despite the area heading for Tier 3 restrictions this weekend.

The 83-year-old will soon be one of 7m in England under the strictest coronavirus measures.

From midnight Saturday the South Yorkshire areas of Barnsley, Doncaster, Rotherham and Sheffield will move under Tier 3, joining Manchester, Lancashire and Liverpool.

This bans households mixing indoors, travelling to areas outside Tier 3, pubs closing that don’t serve food and the additional South Yorkshire rules including the closure of betting shops, casinos, soft play centres, and gym classes – but gyms will stay open.

On Wednesday there were a further 191 deaths across the UK from Covid-19 and 26,668 fresh infections
